What reaction occurs with water test strips?
Yeah, what is the reaction between the strips and water? I know there is something to do with pads ions reacting with specific chemicals, but can get a more specific chemical equation maybe?
A The exact chemical equation is difficult to give, from zillions of different indicator molecules are used in All Newspapers pH test. In general, though, the color change indicator of acidity, when they are protonated and indicators change colors bazicitetit when they are deprotonated. These are the very specific chemical, then. Indicator will react with anything to present a strong base in water or strong acid present in the water is. So, an equation for an indicator of acid can be H3O (+) + In - H2O> + INH (+) from acids generated H3O (+) in water solution. Fundamentals of generating OH (-) in solution water, and this is what reacts with test paper. An equation for an indicator that changes color in basic solution would be INH + OH (-) -> H2O + In (-) To pretend, if you want to bypass OH, you can write the equation on the basis of specific solutions. Say you're using Triethylamine (TEA), a neutral amine with a PKA of over 12 (fun and basic). Go ahead and pretend that it does not generate hydroxide ions in solution (in reality, it does) and reacts directly with site index: INH + TEA - TEAH> (+) + In (-) pH test strips that change color in an acid and another based simply have two (or more many) indicators impregnated paper. Note that most chemical reactions here are not complete. They need to balance the spectator ions of charges. difficult to visualize in this way though. I will expand the base of the equation: First, TEA reacts with water to make hydroxide ion. HTEA TEA is neutral and is an education, while H2O is neutral and is an anion OH: TEA + H2O -> HTEA (OH) Then, tetraethylammonium hydroxide reacts with the indicator salt to make salt-water indicators and tetraethylammonium. it makes deprotonate the hydroxide bearing pointer to make the water neutral. On the left is neutral. That on the right is anionic: HTEA (OH) + In -> HTEA (In) + H2O This is closer to reality (that show these reactions to be simple metathesis reactions they are), but takes much more pressure and it is difficult to visualize the charges moving around.
