How to convert your home made videos onto Movie Maker?

I made a video from my digital camera and I tried to import the Movie Maker and when I go to File, video is not there. Plus, it wont work on Movie Maker, because it is not the proper format. Anyone got any helpful ideas! PLEASE HELP!
